The short version#
- RTLY makes no network requests of its own. There is nothing to send data to.
- It reads the text of messages on the supported sites, in your browser, to decide their direction. It does not store that text and does not send it anywhere.
- It saves your settings in your browser's extension storage, on your device.
- It contains no analytics, advertising, tracking or remote code.
Permissions#
| Permission | Why RTLY needs it |
|---|---|
Access to the supported sites (27 address patterns, all https) | To run on those pages, read their text to choose a direction, and set direction, alignment and font. The install prompt words this as reading and changing your data on those sites. RTLY has no access to other sites. |
storage | To save your settings on your device. |
contextMenus | To add the right-click item that turns RTLY on or off for a site. |
RTLY does not ask for the tabs, history, cookies, downloads, notifications or alarms permissions, and it cannot read your other tabs or your browsing history. It makes the extension's two font files available to the supported sites, so the stylesheet it adds can load them. That also means those sites could detect that RTLY is installed.
What is saved on your device#
| Setting | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Site switches | Which sites you turned off. A site not in the list is on. |
| Site modes | Full, Font or RTL for each site you changed. |
| Pinned sites | Which sites you pinned in the popup. |
| Font size | A number from 85 to 120. |
| Theme and color palette | Your choice for RTLY's own pages. |
| Interface language | The language you picked. |
| Support reminder | When RTLY was installed and when it last showed the reminder, so it can wait a month. |
That is all. Your chats, prompts and answers are never saved by RTLY. Removing the extension removes these settings.
What the website sees#
The site you are on can see its own page after RTLY changed it: RTLY adds attributes such as dir and data-rtly-*, sets styles on text elements, and adds a stylesheet and a font. RTLY does not hide this. It does not read what you type to send it anywhere, and it does not change what the site sends.
Links#
The popup and settings page contain links to the project's GitHub page, to the Buy me a coffee page and to the store's reviews page. They open in a new tab only when you click them. Those sites have their own privacy practices.
This website#
This guide is hosted on GitHub Pages. GitHub may record visits to it, as any web host does. The extension never contacts it. The guide loads no scripts or fonts from other sites and uses your browser's local storage only to remember the light or dark theme you chose.
